SingaporeAirshow | Airbus gains momentum with orders for 78 aircraft

Airbus got off to a strong start this week with three orders for a total of 78 aircraft during the Singapore Airshow. In the first two days of the airshow, the European manufacturer closed contracts with Jazeera Airways, Aviation Capital Group and JetBlue; the last two were for the Airbus A220, which has been gaining relevance for months.

From Monday, February 14 to 18, the Singapore Airshow is being held, where various industry manufacturers are presenting their products. Even before the start of this event, Airbus announced that it would be making important presentations, which began to stand out. However, its presence at the airshow has already begun to pay off.

On the first day, Aviation Capital Group, an aircraft leasing company, signed a firm order for 20 Airbus A220s, in addition to the 40 A320neo and five A321XLRs ACG ordered last December. At the close of business that day, another order for Airbus was reported, this time from Jazeera Airways; the Kuwaiti airline ordered 28 aircraft of which 20 will be Airbus A320neo and 8 A321neo.

On February 15, the second day of the Singapore Airshow, JetBlue Airways signed a firm order for 30 Airbus A220-300s. JetBlue’s CEO, Robin Hayes, indicated that they have seen the benefits of the A220 and are motivated to increase the number of A220s to be delivered. It should be noted that this new order brings the total number of A220s JetBlue has ordered so far to 100 units.

With these orders, Airbus, which had been lagging behind in terms of orders compared to Boeing, is gaining momentum. These results show that the Airbus A220 could become the European manufacturer’s new workhorse. The aircraft has positioned itself in the airlines’ taste thanks to its utility, especially in the midst of a pandemic that has left changes in the demand for travel.
